Capacity to Promote Geothermal Energy (contribution shortly presented)

The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is a very large European network with
worldwide connections. It has contacts in all geological specialties, including
geothermal energy, hydrogeology, structural geology, petrology, geophysics, CO2
sequestration, oil and gas prospecting and deep drilling. Its geological experts in
these fields have an important capacity and knowledge to develop this renewable
energy in Europe.
The EFG has gathered a group of experts on geothermal energy from many European
countries. These include members of the European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC)
with whom the EFG is in contact.
The EFG office in Brussels is especially active and has many contacts with the
European Commission. The EFG maintains a number of expert Panels on various
geological topics to be available to answer queries from the Commission.
Since the Geological profession is intimately linked with the future of Geothermal
Energy the EFG decided to include this group of experts in its Action Plan.
It also has the capability to promote knowledge / education and training through its
networks and its experts, via articles in geological publications such as the
European Geologist Magazine and the newsletters and publications of national
geological associations. Its members also contribute semi-scientific articles to
public magazines and newspapers.
The EFG has a distance learning capability which can also be utilised for education
purposes. Through this and other methods the EFG can assist in the training of
relevant people in governmental and other situations.
In collaboration with other associations present in Brussels, EFG has the capacity to
carry out specific actions to promote geothermal energy through conferences or by the
publication of position papers.
Thus the EFG can be a vehicle for promoting geothermal energy throughout Europe and
help to enhance the quality development of this important energy sector.
